Lipid Chemistry and Its Role in Human Health
Main Article Content
Abstract
Lipids are a diverse group of biological molecules that perform essential functions in human physiology. They serve as concentrated energy stores, form major components of cell membranes, participate in signaling and hormone production, support absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and contribute to insulation and protection of tissues. Lipid chemistry is strongly influenced by molecular structure, fatty-acid saturation, chain length, polarity, and functional groups. Balanced lipid metabolism is essential for health, whereas disturbances in lipid transport and metabolism can contribute to cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and other conditions. This paper examines nine major dimensions of lipid chemistry and its role in human health, including lipid classification, fatty acids, membrane structure, energy metabolism, lipoproteins, signaling, nutrition, disease, and emerging therapeutic applications.
