Abstract

This article examines the African experience of colonialism and its profound effect on national identity and cultural heritage. By exploring the impact of European colonial powers, including Britain, France, and Belgium, the paper discusses how colonial policies disrupted African societies and redefined political, economic, and social structures. The study focuses on the imposition of foreign governance systems, the exploitation of natural resources, and the suppression of indigenous cultures. Through case studies of countries such as Ghana, Kenya, and Congo, the article highlights the diverse forms of resistance to colonial rule, from armed uprisings to intellectual movements. The paper also examines the role of African elites in negotiating independence and the challenges faced by newly independent African nations in reconciling colonial legacies with the desire for self-determination. The article concludes by reflecting on the enduring effects of colonialism on African identity, politics, and development in the post-colonial era.
