Abstract

This paper explores the ongoing debates surrounding Soviet-era monuments in Russia, examining how these monuments continue to serve as markers of cultural heritage and political memory. Focusing on the case of Moscow and St. Petersburg, the study analyzes public reactions to the preservation and destruction of Soviet monuments, linking these processes to broader issues of historical identity and nationalism. The article argues that the treatment of Soviet monuments is not only a matter of cultural heritage but also a reflection of contemporary Russian attitudes towards its Soviet past. The study highlights how these monuments are both contested and celebrated in different regions, emphasizing their significance in shaping national memory.
