Abstract

This article examines the long-lasting impact of European colonialism on the political structures of Latin America, focusing on the social and political legacies that continue to shape the region today. The study traces the colonial histories of key countries such as Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, highlighting how colonial powers, primarily Spain and Portugal, established centralized political systems and economies that facilitated the extraction of wealth and the subjugation of indigenous populations. The paper explores the ways in which these colonial structures were maintained or transformed during the independence movements of the 19th century and how they laid the groundwork for the political challenges faced by newly independent nations. By analyzing the development of political institutions, legal frameworks, and economic systems, the research highlights the enduring effects of colonial rule on Latin American political culture. The study concludes by reflecting on how post-colonial political struggles continue to influence the governance and development of the region.
