Korean Independence Movements in the Early 20th Century: The Struggle Against Japanese Colonialism

Abstract
This article investigates the Korean independence movements in the early 20th century, focusing on the resistance to Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945. The study examines key events such as the 1919 March 1st Movement, the role of Korean intellectuals in promoting national consciousness, and the rise of underground organizations like the Korean Provisional Government. By analyzing the political and social conditions of Korea under Japanese occupation, the paper explores the ways in which colonial policies affected the Korean economy, culture, and identity. It also considers the role of external actors, particularly the Chinese Nationalist and Communist movements, in supporting Korean resistance efforts. The research highlights the contributions of prominent leaders like Kim Il-sung, Park Chung-hee, and other revolutionary figures in shaping the future of Korean independence. The article concludes by examining the aftermath of Japanese colonialism and the legacies of the independence movements in the establishment of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea).
