Abstract
This article explores the legacy of British colonial rule in Malaysia and its impact on the formation of national identity in the post-colonial era. The study examines how the British colonial policies of divide and rule, economic exploitation, and cultural assimilation contributed to the creation of distinct ethnic identities within Malaysia’s population. By analyzing the historical development of British influence in the region, the paper traces the transition from colonial administration to independence and the struggles of Malaya to create a unified national identity amidst a diverse population. The research focuses on the role of political figures like Tunku Abdul Rahman and the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) in advocating for independence and the challenges of managing ethnic tensions after decolonization. The article also explores how the legacy of British colonialism shaped Malaysia’s education system, legal framework, and political structures. The paper concludes by reflecting on the long-term effects of colonialism on Malaysia’s contemporary political landscape and national identity.
