The Influence of European Colonialism on the Political Evolution of Nigeria
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article investigates the influence of European colonialism on the political evolution of Nigeria, particularly under British colonial rule. The study traces the imposition of British governance structures, including the establishment of indirect rule, which combined traditional African leadership with colonial administration. The paper explores how British policies shaped Nigeria’s political system, including the creation of a centralized state, the division of the country into regions, and the introduction of Western legal and educational systems. The article also examines the rise of political movements advocating for Nigerian independence, focusing on key figures such as Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo. The paper assesses how Nigeria’s transition to independence in 1960 was shaped by its colonial past, particularly in terms of its political institutions, ethnic relations, and economic structure. The research concludes by reflecting on the lasting impact of colonialism on Nigeria’s political challenges in the post-independence period.
