Abstract

This article explores the influence of British colonial rule on the urban development and city planning of Singapore. It examines how the British colonial government transformed the city’s infrastructure, creating the framework for what would later become one of the world’s leading global cities. The study traces the development of Singapore’s port facilities, its infrastructure for trade, and the early planning of residential, commercial, and industrial spaces that laid the groundwork for the city’s economic success in the 20th century. By analyzing colonial architectural plans, government policies, and the urban landscape of colonial Singapore, the paper explores the social and economic priorities of British urban planners and how their decisions affected the indigenous population. The article also addresses how the British colonial approach to urban development shaped the political, social, and cultural environment of Singapore, laying the foundations for the city’s unique multicultural identity. The paper concludes by discussing how the legacies of British urban planning continue to influence Singapore’s contemporary cityscape.
