Abstract

This article investigates the influence of Soviet educational reforms on the development of educational systems in Southeast Asia during the Cold War and their lasting effects on contemporary education systems in the region. In the 1950s and 1960s, several Southeast Asian nations, particularly Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, looked to Soviet models of education for inspiration in their efforts to build post-colonial societies. This study examines the Soviet educational philosophies that emphasized science, engineering, and socialist ideals, and how these were adapted to local contexts in Southeast Asia. Drawing from archival records and policy documents from Soviet advisors and Southeast Asian governments, the paper analyzes the impact of Soviet pedagogical approaches on curriculum development, teacher training, and the expansion of higher education in these countries. The research highlights the tensions between Western educational models and Soviet-influenced reforms, as well as the region’s shift towards embracing local cultural and political values in the education system. The study concludes by discussing the legacy of Soviet educational influence in the region and its impact on contemporary educational practices in Southeast Asia.
