Abstract

The Soviet Union played a prominent role in shaping the ideological and political landscape of anti-colonial struggles worldwide, including in South Africa. This article examines how South African historians, intellectuals, and activists engaged with Soviet history between 1940 and 1980, with a focus on its relevance to liberation movements and debates about racial justice. Drawing on archival documents, political pamphlets, and oral histories, the study explores how Soviet revolutionary narratives were appropriated and reinterpreted in South African contexts.
The findings show that the Russian Revolution was often invoked as a model of radical transformation, inspiring both the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP). Historians sympathetic to liberation movements framed Soviet industrialization and collectivization as lessons for postcolonial state-building. Conversely, conservative and apartheid-aligned scholars used Soviet history to discredit revolutionary politics, portraying it as inherently authoritarian and destabilizing.
The article argues that South African historiography of the Soviet Union was not merely derivative but was deeply entangled with local struggles against colonialism and apartheid. Revolutionary memory was adapted to articulate visions of racial equality, land reform, and economic justice. By situating South African engagements within broader global debates, the study demonstrates how Soviet history functioned as a transnational resource for imagining alternative futures.
Ultimately, the research highlights the significance of Soviet historical narratives in shaping both radical and conservative historiographies in South Africa. It contributes to the global history of revolutionary memory, illustrating how Soviet experiences resonated beyond Europe and influenced the intellectual foundations of anti-colonial resistance.
