Abstract

The Russian Revolution of 1917 left a profound imprint on political and intellectual life in Greece. This article examines how Greek intellectuals, historians, and political movements engaged with the October Revolution from 1917 to 1970. Using Greek-language newspapers, memoirs, and archival materials from political organizations, the study explores the shifting narratives of 1917 within Greece’s turbulent twentieth century, marked by dictatorship, civil war, and political polarization.
The research shows that the Revolution initially inspired leftist movements in Greece, especially within the labor and student movements of the interwar years. Intellectuals interpreted 1917 as a universal symbol of emancipation and as a potential path for Greece’s own modernization. However, conservative and royalist groups portrayed the Revolution as a threat to national stability, reinforcing divisions in Greek political culture. During the Greek Civil War (1946–1949), the memory of 1917 became a central reference point, invoked by communists as a source of legitimacy and by anti-communists as justification for repression.
The article argues that the historiographical reception of the Russian Revolution in Greece illustrates how international events were appropriated within national struggles. Revolutionary memory was neither static nor monolithic; it was reinterpreted across different political contexts, often as a mirror for Greece’s internal conflicts. By situating Greek intellectual debates within the wider European circulation of revolutionary memory, the study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of how transnational events shape national historiographies. Ultimately, it underscores the importance of revolutionary memory as a dynamic field where global and local histories intersect.
