Abstract

The Russian Revolution of 1917 resonated deeply within Spain, a country divided by political conflict and marked by the upheaval of its own Civil War (1936–1939). This article investigates how Spanish intellectuals, political leaders, and cultural figures engaged with the Russian Revolution as both a historical event and a political model during the interwar period. Drawing on Spanish newspapers, political pamphlets, and personal correspondence, the study explores how narratives of 1917 were appropriated in debates over socialism, anarchism, and democracy in Spain.
The findings demonstrate that the Russian Revolution was not simply transplanted into the Spanish context but was reinterpreted through Spain’s own political divisions. Leftist groups, particularly communists and anarchists, hailed 1917 as evidence of the possibility of radical transformation, while conservatives and Catholic intellectuals framed it as a cautionary tale of chaos and moral decay. During the Spanish Civil War, Soviet support for the Republican side further intensified the reception of 1917, with propaganda materials explicitly drawing parallels between the Bolshevik struggle and the Republican cause.
The article argues that the Spanish reception of the Russian Revolution illustrates the dynamic interplay between global revolutionary memory and local political struggles. Spanish intellectuals did not merely borrow from Soviet models but selectively adapted them to Spain’s unique social and cultural landscape. This comparative approach highlights the transnational circulation of revolutionary ideas and their ability to inspire, polarize, and reshape national debates. Ultimately, the study contributes to the historiography of both the Russian and Spanish revolutions, emphasizing the need to understand them not in isolation but as interconnected nodes in the broader history of twentieth-century political upheaval.
